About the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

A Royal Companion with a Loving Heart

🐾 The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the most beloved toy breeds in the world — and for good reason. With their big, soulful eyes, silky coats, and endlessly affectionate nature, Cavaliers have a way of melting hearts wherever they go. Originally bred to warm the laps of British nobility, these dogs have retained their royal charm while becoming one of the most adaptable and family-friendly companions you can find.

👑 A Touch of Royal History

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s story is as charming as the dogs themselves. The breed traces its roots back to 16th- and 17th-century England, where small toy spaniels were the adored companions of aristocrats and royalty. King Charles I and his son, King Charles II, were especially devoted to the breed — so much so that the dogs eventually bore their royal name. Legend has it that King Charles II was rarely seen without his beloved spaniels by his side, even allowing them in Parliament and royal chambers. Over time, the breed’s appearance changed as toy spaniels were crossed with Asian breeds like the Pug, creating the shorter-nosed King Charles Spaniel. But in the early 1900s, dedicated breeders worked to restore the original “old-style” spaniel, resulting in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel we know and love today — with its soft expression, longer muzzle, and gentle grace. Today, the Cavalier continues to carry its royal heritage with elegance and pride, while being one of the most affectionate and loving companions in modern homes.

✨ Appearance & Coat

Cavaliers are small but graceful dogs, typically weighing 13–18 pounds. Their silky, medium-length coats come in four (AKC recognized) beautiful color patterns:

  • Blenheim: Chestnut and white (the classic “Cavalier look”)

  • Tricolor: Black, white, and tan

  • Ruby: Solid rich red

  • Black & Tan: Jet black with tan markings

Regular brushing helps maintain their lustrous coats and keeps shedding to a minimum.

❤️ Health & Care

As with all purebred dogs, it’s important to work with responsible breeders who prioritize health testing and proper care. Cavaliers can be prone to certain hereditary conditions such as mitral valve disease (MVD) and patellar luxation, which is why ethical breeding practices make such a difference. At our kennel, we take pride in performing regular health screenings and only breeding dogs that meet the highest standards of health and temperament. Daily walks, a balanced diet, and regular vet care will help your Cavalier live a long, happy, and healthy life — typically 12 to 15 years.
